First Day of School
Today was our first day of homeschool. Officially. I had gotten my curriculum in July and made sure to test it out before we started. Boy, I am sure glad that I did! It would have been completely overwhelming if I hadn't. There is so much. So very much to go through. I actually had to toss out one of my spelling programs because it was just too much. I even ran out of time today.
It is so much different than last year. Not just because Maddy is now in kindergarten, but Kate still just needs so much attention. Each lesson is new, so it requires actual teaching. Last year, there was one big lesson, and the rest of the week was review. This year it seems like I have to teach new concepts each time, and not just for one subject, but almost all of them! So every subject seems to take 45 minutes. This is leaving me having to balance things out just perfectly and feeling like I really have to be working and moving and "doing" every part of the day. Once I slack, I get behind. So, obviously that won't last very long, so I am working on how we can make that work.

I am really seeking Gods wisdom in all of this. The how's, the when's, the what's, especially. What do I teach.... do I have too much? Too little? I love that we can spend time on the things that they just do not get. Extra time that they wouldn't have in school. I also think it will take a bit for all of us to get used to all this school stimulation. Here's some highlights from the last few days.

Making Time
It has been entirely too long. A friend of mine stirred me to get going again. Really, I love to blog. Especially when I have readers! And especially when I can talk about encouraging things, like what's happening in our homeschool world. It's so fun to look back on, and for the first time in a year or so, I looked back on some of the recent posts I had done; and it made me so happy! It made me feel that I had done something right.
Blogging makes me really uneasy at times. Knowing that some who know you might read it and judge. My hope is to encourage and to build others up through this blog and maybe even along the way, I might have some good ideas to pass along too. So here goes... We start school in about two weeks! (formally) Lately we have been doing school here and there to get used to it, and to refresh. I thought it was also important to try to get a little cushion room for when we take trips and enjoy life together. So here's my plea. I want to make time for this! I want to make time for photos. But I also don't want condemnation when I can't. But I certainly want to.

My devotion time
One of my prayers at night is that I am given wisdom in each situation I'm in. Especially homeschooling, but in all the battles I face each day. How do I get through them?
And each day, I most certainly do. But do I apply it? Not always. I feel like God is pressing all kinds of things at me... and most are repetitious. But I am not always focused.
So, an "Aha" moment. Again.
Prayer.
Seven times he prayed!
I'm so quick to pray once, and then be disappointed that my prayer wasn't answered. The other story we read was about this man who prayed for several years for missionaries to come and deliver the gospel to his and other children.. the only problem was they lived far away in the jungle, and it was not in the missionaries territories. They would travel 80-100 miles one way to plead with the missionaries. After years of praying, it finally happened. They didn't give up.
I was reading my devotional the other day called A Confident Heart by Renee Swope. The title was "Praying With Confidence" and the scripture was 1 John 5:14
You armed me with strength for battle. Psalm 18:39
Proverbs 16:16 “How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!”
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. - Jeremiah 29:13
And each day, I most certainly do. But do I apply it? Not always. I feel like God is pressing all kinds of things at me... and most are repetitious. But I am not always focused.
I not only have gotten some good things from Psalms, Proverbs, and devotionals, but from the kids' bible stories too! Sonlight does a really good job making connections between their books and selections. So it is not by chance that both a bible passage we read today and a story of a missionary were about the importance of prayer. Today we talked about Ahab and how the prophet Elijah had warned him that there would be famine in the land. Ahab paid no attention to him, but after awhile he saw that indeed there was no rain. So he searched for him for three years, never to find him. God sent Elijah back to tell Ahab there would be rain. (The full passage is in 1 Kings 17 & 18) Story short... Elijah went up to the mountain top to pray for rain.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.” 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel. And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees. 43 And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” And he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go again,” seven times. 44 And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man's hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’” 45 And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel. 46 And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah, and he gathered up his garment and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
So, an "Aha" moment. Again.

This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.This is also the same verse that was spoken in church this last week. In the devotional she talked about taking scriptures from the Bible and turning them into powerful prayers. Using Gods word as a guide gave her a new sense of confidence and direction when she didn't know what to say. If you think about it, praying scriptures should give us confidence because we are praying Gods will when we are praying Gods word! Hebrews 4:12 says that Gods word is alive & active. We can ask God to show us verses that we can pray each day so that we can see His word come alive in our circumstances and become active in our lives. What verses has God been showing you?
And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lords glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18

Homeschool, Week 19
I think we are on week 19... I'm not quite sure. This past week, homeschooling went really well. I felt like God really blessed our time and gave me wisdom on exactly what to read and teach, and I felt it was fruitful. We are starting to apply some of the scripture we read. Ella cooperated, for the most part- and I got help from my mother in law and from Peter this week... and that is probably why it went extra well :)
This week I've tried to get a little extra grip on organization. Now that our tree is down... it has really bugged me all the places in our home that are extremely full of clutter and mess. So this week, when I got the chance, I organized. First I did our craft closet. Then Ella's room (shelves, clothing, etc) I then, with Peters help, tackled the fridge. We cleaned out everything. Wiped down everything. Tossed things. Then, so I could finish a craft project with the girls, Peter finished the bottom half of the fridge and by noon we were done. He also cleaned out the garage and our laundry is pretty much under control. I felt like Peter was a rock star yesterday and I told him that, several, several times.
I'm feeling a great sadness as I remember all the photos taken in previous years. It's also my goal now to take more pictures AND edit them! Sure, I might fall behind but I need to try. The memories are so precious to me and I find great joy looking back on the things we did. It stirs up a lot of emotions.
